Replug: And it so happened

Hardly has a play that revolves around the Partition of 1947 and the divide between India and Hua Kuch Yun did.
The play Hua Kuch Yun (So It Happened) was performed in Lahore’s Alhamra Arts Council this January.

We had all gathered in front of the Lahore Press Club, on the foot of the Shimla Hill, and we were Dehaar). We were almost a hundred people – men, women and children who wanted to implement Punjabi as a compulsory course from primary school onwards.

Dr. Abdus Salam was born and raised in Jhang, a small city in the centre of Pakistan’s Punjab province and his mother was from the district of Gurdaspur, now in Indian Punjab. His family was far from wealthy but valued education. Unsurprisingly, he went to a government school in Jhang and was an ace student.

Replug: “I love all the Sufi saints and their poetry”

I went to meet Hans Raj Hans in Lahore’s Avari Hotel on the Mall Road on a February morning. He had performed at the same hotel a day before. We sat down to speak in a small lobby on the second floor. Raj sat there after warmly greeting me, with his blonde shoulder-length curls and light eyes, in an overcoat that looked like a sherwani.

And it so happened

The main protagonists Quratulain and Raja. Both are Indian Muslims in pre-Partition Amritsar and orphaned due to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. From that point on the play oscillates between them meeting and separating. And meanwhile, some key historical events take place- like the evolution of the Pakistan Movement, Partition, Bhutto’s execution and Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Ma Boli in Punjab

Punjabi is otherwise the tenth most commonly spoken the language on Earth, and it is the third or fourth most spoken language in countries like India and Canada. Nevertheless, it is a dying language because across the diaspora, more and more Punjabis are choosing to speak, read, write and promote Urdu, Hindi, English or French instead of their own mother tongue.
